Introduction
This project came to me from what I can honestly describe as not only a “motivated individual” but also what I now describe as a “Dear Friend of mine”. Jan Lederman approached me and introduced himself through a network of friends and proposed creating a book about The Spirits Promise Ranch.
In short, The ranch rescues Horses and works with these beautiful animals to help people dealing with grief.
I liked the idea and was intrigued.
After attending a fundraising event to meet everyone and learn a little more about what I signed up for, I was more than just intrigued. I left that event thinking this was a lot more than a project for me, this is the kind of project that makes everything else I’ve done seem like a rehearsal.
While showing a teaser book, someone came over to say, “They saved my life”. That was it…that was the book. More than just pretty scenes, there were the stories of the power that the ranch had in the process of dealing with grief, emotional trauma and looking for answers. This all was happening with the help of these beautiful Equine partners that have been rescued and have now found a new and important purpose to their lives.
Both Marisa and Christina gave me unrestricted access in spite of the overwhelming daily task they have to maintain the property and lead individual and group sessions at the Ranch.
The photographs are paired with stories written in their own words and gathered by Rachel Lederman. The stories cover a range of insights and inspiration that the ranch and these equestrian partners have given to so many. This is a collection of some of those Kindred Spirits and their stories.

Foreword
As someone who has spent my entire life devoted to Animal Welfare, I was honored that Jim reached out to me to write the foreword of this very special and heartfelt project.
In addition to all of my rescue angels that have made my life complete, I have also been so blessed to be surrounded by horses my entire life.
And I can promise you, any time spent with an equine will add purpose and joy that is truly indescribable.
Jim’s photographs encapsulate the incredible bond that horses and humans can have and it’s a bond that is life-changing.
Through the lens Jim conveys in the most touching and beautiful way, how these rescue horses have truly rescued every person they have come in contact with.
This book is a life lesson for people of all ages, because it beautifully portrays the importance of saving these incredible, majestic animals.
And it’s a priceless gift for them and those lucky enough to be in their presence.
